The Barn Surgery Infection Control Annual Statement

Purpose

This annual statement will be generated each year in January in accordance with the requirements of The Health and Social Care Act 2008 Code of Practice on the prevention and control of infections and related guidance. It summarises:

  • Any infection transmission incidents and any action taken (these will have been reported in accordance with our Significant Event procedure)
  • Details of any infection control audits undertaken and actions undertaken
  • Details of any risk assessments undertaken for prevention and control of infection
  • Details of staff training
  • Any review and update of policies, procedures and guidelines

Infection Prevention and Control (IPC) Lead

The Barn Surgery Leads for Infection Prevention and Control: Sarane Brennan (Practice Nurse) and Gemma Early (Assistant Practice Manager)

Sarane attends quarterly infection control forums and keeps updated on infection prevention practice.

Infection transmission incidents (Significant Events)

Significant events (which may involve examples of good practice as well as challenging events) are investigated in detail to see what can be learnt and to indicate changes that might lead to future improvements. All significant events are reviewed in the monthly departmental team meetings, and learning is cascaded to all relevant staff.

In the past year there has been one significant event related to infection control. An Electrician made a change to the electrical ring to prevent recurrence.

We have also registered with Heales Medical Occupational Health Services following a needlestick injury to a member of staff.

Infection Prevention Audit and Actions

The Annual Infection Prevention and Control audit is being completed by Gemma Early.

The Barn Surgery plan to undertake the following audits in 2020:

  • Annual Infection Prevention and Control Audit
  • Cleaning Audit
  • Hand Hygiene Audit
  • Clinical Room Audit

 Risk Assessments

Risk assessments are carried out so that best practice can be established and then followed. In the last year the following risk assessments were carried out/reviewed:

Manual Handling: The practice has a risk assessment proforma tool in place.

Display Screen Equipment: A workstation checklist is in place and this was carried out November 2019 and will be performed again November 2020.

Needlestick Injuries: Following an injury to a member of staff in September 2019 a new policy was written and up-to-date information of who to contact displayed in all clinical rooms.

New and Expectant Mothers: A risk assessment checklist is in place.

Building: A risk assessment of the building was conducted July 2019 and will be reviewed July 2020.

Patient Access: Following a patient falling in the hallway a risk assessment of the area was conducted and hazard tape was put in place. We are also hoping to have a new entrance way to improve access for the elderly and wheelchair users.

Doorstops: Following a Safety Alert received November 2019, a risk assessment was conducted and unless absolutely necessary doorstops were removed. For the rooms still requiring them new brightly coloured ones were purchased.

Workplace Inspection Checklist: This was carried out November 2019 and will be reviewed November 2020.
